It’s Coming Around Again

Early August saw a lot of rain in a short period of time causing rivers to blow out and even shut down the little town of Markleeville. It’s nice to see the rivers start to come back to their color and visibility improve. We’re going to see a cool down coming this weekend and it should be great timing for the rivers coming back and bug life to start moving.

East Carson River:

The floods around the Easter Sierra from Mammoth to Tahoe heavily impacted this river and much of the topography of the river has changed in the typical runs and buckets. Water clarity up high is starting to improve and we should see some better visibility as we get to the colder overnight temps this weekend. Above Hangman’s and along the highway has been productive on small food - midges as your small bug under an indicator will get you opportunities up here. Below Hangman’s has been a crapshoot as runoff is impacting visibility all the way into Nevada. 18-20 Zebra midge (black, copper), 14-16 Blowtorch, 16 French Dip

Truckee River:

With the East Carson being blown out, we’ve been more active on the Truckee but so has everyone else. AM bite has the ticket to cover water here, find your spot mid-morning and lock it down until Noon or as water temps climb. Overnight temps are still hovering around 50 so really keep an eye on the thermometer after noon. Typical indicator rigs with ‘little black shit’ flies. 8 Silly Leg Stone, 18 Perdigon

Little Truckee River:

Again, you’ll want to get their early, hit two or three 5-star holes and then hunker down for the mid-morning as the foot traffic increases by 9am. These fish see a lot of flies and even more fly lines. The ticket to catching them is often a downstream presentation with 5.5X or 6X tippet. Try small PMD drys followed by a smaller PMD emerger, or a medium sized chubby with a bead headed PMD nymph.

East Walker River:

Even the E-Dub went off-color for a bit and flows came up but they are back down and settled at about 75-80. It’s not a long day on the river out here and we don’t really have anything new to report. If you go, go early, let us know how it goes.

Stillwater Options:

Fish are just bigger in stillwater, right? We agree right now! The mornings have seen some fish sipping on top but they are particular - match the hatch and go small - no, smaller. Sawmill Lake has seen some hogs and they are not necessarily down low. Deep rigs with slip indicators are working but we’ve been productive on top and 10-14 feet.
